Eddie Alvarez is gonna be rich as hell

alvarezWe haven’t made too much of the Eddie Alvarez vs. Bellator vs. UFC ménage a troi and legal issues. Quite frankly, if you’re looking for a legal synopsis of this situation, you’ve come to the wrong place. Hell, we just listed our top 10 articles of 2012 and a story titled, ‘War Machine is One Horny Dude’ was on the list, so legal analysis isn’t my strength.

But word is starting to leak out about details of UFC’s offer to Alvarez, and that’s what I find interesting. First the numbers (according to MMA Junkie) offered to Alvarez by the UFC:

  • 8-fight deal
  • $70,000 to show/$70,000 to win
  • Above figures raise in $5000 increments after each win (maximum of $210,000—which I take to mean $105k/$105)
  • $250,000 signing bonus (paid in 3 installments of $85k, $85k and $80k)
  • PPV cut–$1 for every “buy” between 200,000 and 400,000; $2 for each buy between 400,000 and 600,000; and $2.50 for every buy over 600,000 buys. (more on this later)
  • Guaranteed one fight on Fox
  • Guaranteed three appearances as commentator for UFC events
  • He will get a title shot

I don’t want to get into whether Bellator’s counter offer is an equal match or not right now. Instead, let’s look at this from another perspective. This deal would easily make Alvarez one of the highest paid fighters in the division—on paper, more than champ Ben Henderson, and most of the top contenders. Off the top of my head, I’d say only guys like BJ Penn might be making more than that.

His reported cut of PPVs is also significant–although Bellator downplayed it as not being guaranteed. It’s not uncommon for a decent PPV to attract more than 400,000 buys. That’s about a $800,000 payday for Eddie. What if he’s on a card that includes GSP? He’d earn well over a million dollars in PPV revenue alone.

I’m not sure if Ben Henderson gets some kind of “champions’ bonus” or not, but I know his per fight take is only in the $40,000/$40,000 range. Eddie Alvarez will be able to wipe his ass with $40k very soon.
