‘UFC on Fox’ series keeps bringing it — April’s event no exception

UFC on FOX 7Is it just me, or are the UFC’s Fox events becoming the go-to place for all your favorite fights? They all seem to be loaded up with multiple meaningful—or at least exciting—fights that I want to see. The same will hold true for UFC on Fox 7 in April. It’s somewhat fitting that San Jose will be the host of this event which has a definite Strikeforce flavor to it.

Two big fights have been attached to this event. The first—presumably the headliner—is a lightweight title fight between champion Ben Henderson and challenger Gilbert Melendez. This is essentially a title unification bout, as Melendez is the reigning Strikeforce champ.

The other big matchup being associated with UFC on Fox 7 is a heavyweight fight we almost saw in 2012. Daniel Cormier will face former UFC champ Frank Mir. Cormier’s buzz is like no one else in this entire Strikeforce-to-UFC transition, and he’s been rumored to be a legit contender at both heavyweight and light heavyweight. In fact, despite Cormier’s strong preference to remain at heavyweight, Dana White has said that DC “might” be in line for a shot at Jon Jones right away. He only has one thing working against him–> THIS.

Before I post this article, how important is this fight for Melendez? He’s entering the toughest division (in my opinion) in the UFC with a title belt and plenty of questions. MMA message boards are full of people calling out Gilbert for his “poor” quality of opposition over the years. I’m not validating that—it isn’t his fault. But I also understand those arguments. I don’t think Gil has to win the title to justify his place in the UFC’s elite, but make no mistake; he does have to go out there and fight a solid fight.
