UPDATE: After Twitter and Facebook went crazy, it appears that Rick Hawn will get paid after all. This afternoon MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani learned that HTFU owner Mark Gingrich decided to pay Hawn. He claims it was a miscommunication–which I won’t give my opinion on. Either way, Gingrich thought better of his actions and decided to issue another check. Our previous story is below.

Did you guys catch wind of this story about Rick Hawn’s unsuccessful Bellator title shot against Michael Chandler over the weekend? Reportedly, Chandler wasn’t the only one to rough Hawn up. Now he’s being slapped in the face by one of his main sponsors—who won’t be mentioned here yet, but speculation is rampant if you search around. I have no confirmation of those rumors though.

Here’s the story. Hawn lost badly to Chandler, we know that. But it sounds like this sponsor sent Hawn a check for wearing the logo and all the other things involved in sponsoring a fighter. After witnessing the result of the fight, the company STOPPED PAYMENT ON THE CHECK! Yes, you heard that correctly. The sponsor said they weren’t paying Hawn because he lost. That’s bush.

Hawn tweeted a note about the stopped payment, and obviously legal action is being filed. I’m not a lawyer, but let me give some free advice to whoever the sponsor is…settle this now. You will lose. You will look like a complete dick. You will be humiliated on MMA message boards for the rest of your existence.

Here’s an email that was supposedly sent by the unnamed sponsor to journalist Mike Russell:

At this point, a stop payment has been placed on check which cannot be cashed or deposited now. I will not comment on Rick and his fight. That is not my place. But what I will tell you is this: I took a huge chance with him. TV exposure was great…but it only holds weight if he wins or puts on a good show. Neither happened. At the end of the day…not one sole (sp) will run to [my] store and buy product because they [saw my logo and saw] Rick loose (sp) the fight. I’ve made it my career and business to know what nets a return on investment for the brand…and this is the number 1 reason why I DO NOT hand out money or product to fighters.”

Oh boy, this is going to end badly.
