WeidmanVIGFunny how things change. Remember not too long ago we reported on a story where Anderson Silva’s manager called all the so-called middleweight contenders “amateurs” and a “big joke”? And remember earlier this week when Ed Soares made the ridiculous claim that Cung Le would be the best fight for Silva? Well now at least one contender isn’t a joke anymore, according to Soares. Apparently Chris Weidman has elevated his ranking during the past six months or so—without even fighting.

Soares just told UOL Esporte that Weidman is now a possibility. “They’ll have to spend a lot of money promoting this fight,” Soares said. “Anderson has more title defenses than he has fights as a professional. Anderson has told me that he really wants to fight in Brazil again. Weidman himself once told me that he would be interested in doing the fight there. So I think that’s what should happen.”

This is coming just days after Weidman spoke about Silva ducking him (aren’t we seeing this same scenario unfolding with Rousey/Cyborg?), so a fight between Weidman and Silva might not be impossible after all. That’s good for a couple reasons. 1) Weidman is the current top contender. It’s important for champions to fight the best fighters available and not randomly decide if that top contender is worthy. 2) A Cung Le fight is absurd.

Soares initial response was that Le is a more well-know fighter and it would be easier to sell to fans. I’ve got news…Le isn’t well-known outside MMA. Not to mention, he’s not even close to the top 10, let alone being a top contender.

Weidman vs. Silva? Suddenly it looks like it might happen after all.
