WEC 53: Henderson vs. PettisWell that didn’t take long. Just a few days after nudging Dana White via text, Anthony Pettis got his title shot. Pettis will drop to 145 to fight featherweight champion Jose Aldo on August 3 at a venue to be determined. Although speculation was that Pettis might be a nice fit to headline a Milwaukee show—which was just recently rumored for August—it now seems unlikely.

Dana white had high praise for this fight, telling MMA Junkie, “Two of the baddest dudes in the fight business are going to fight at 145 pounds. These guys are two of the most amazing, gravity-defying athletes in the sport. I am so pumped for this fight.” I’m sure he’s not the only one.

It’s ironic and almost fitting that Pettis—who has supposedly been promised a lightweight title shot since winning the WEC title in December of 2010—would get a featherweight shot almost immediately after requesting it. You’ll remember, Pettis texted White following Aldo’s title defense against Frankie Edgar over the weekend.

Showtime (16-2) has three straight UFC wins, including two knockouts of the night against Joe Lauzon and Donald Cerrone.  Aldo’s (22-1) streak is much more comprehensive. He’s undefeated in 8 WEC bouts and 4 UFC fights. This marks the third time in four fights that a longtime lightweight has been given a shot at Aldo. Texas, Chicago, Las Vegas and Rio are all being considered to host this fight.

I’ve learned not to make any guarantees on the quality of upcoming fights, but with Pettis and Aldo, I’d be tempted to say this is almost certainly going to be a great fight.
