Sorry Mike, it wasn’t Belfort…Tavares failed ‘UFC on FX’ test

belfortbispingRemember when I suggested that Michael Bisping was trying to stir up controversy by helping spread the rumor that Vitor Belfort failed his drug test at UFC on FX 7? Well that rumor was officially squashed. Results were revealed and it wasn’t Vitor at all. According to Tatame, it was Thiago Tavares who got nabbed.

Tavares got knocked out in the first round by Khabib Nurmagomedov in about 2 minutes so there’s no reason for the dreaded “overturned decision” in this case. And in terms of Bisping, he won’t be getting one either. His resounding knockout loss to Belfort will stand. That moves Bisping from title contention for the time being. With The Count turning 34 soon, he better rally quickly if he wants to regain his status.

I did think it was curious that Bisping started tweeting the unfounded rumor when it started hitting the web. I don’t think Bisping started the rumor, but in a way he pushed it out there to the masses by saying something like “gee I hope this rumor about Vitor failing his drug test isn’t true.” What I think he meant to say was “man I hope it’s true so I can rewind that loss and still get to fight for the title.”

But alas, that won’t happen. Belfort proved to be clean—at least according to the governing body in Sao Paulo—and Bisping will have to take a step back. Luckily for Bisping, the middleweight division is in such turmoil, he might be able to recover in only one fight. I could see him realistically getting booked against Hector Lombard—assuming Lombard beats Yushin Okami in March. That could make Bisping/Lombard a potential number 1 contender fight for the end of 2013/early 2014. Just thinking out loud.
