Bas Rutten on Machida: “He doesn’t have a lot of weapons”

basBas Rutten is something of a legend in MMA for his stellar fighting career; and now for his entertaining and knowledgeable commentary. He’s also not afraid to say something controversial because he has some serious credibility. He recently weighed in on UFC 157’s co-main event, Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida. Fans of the Dragon might not like it.

After giving Henderson some props for his everyman persona, he knew he was about to touch a nerve with some fans. “I’m gonna get a lot of heat now,” he predicted in an interview with MMA Interviews. “Machida doesn’t have a lot of weapons. Whatever he does, he does really well. He’s got great distance, great accuracy, but his attack is always the same. It’s a cross, or a kick and a cross. When you push him, he always moves to the same side.”

That’s not exactly a glowing review from one former UFC champ to another, is it? Still, I’d say Machida has been pretty successful with his limited attack. I suppose Machida’s cohort, Anderson Silva also does the same thing—makes everyone he faces look silly. I know, I know, that’s not was Bas meant. But it is interesting to hear that type of criticism directed at one of the best fighters in the world.

Ultimately, Bas used his observations to show how Henderson could benefit. “If Dan would look at that and just bullrush him, he could throw a big hand there and that could stop him.” This fight has been toward the top of my “can’t wait” list since they announced it. I’m not sure if Rousey vs. Carmouche will be an exciting fight or not. But I think this one will be.
