Transgender Fighter’s license under review after 39 second KO

Tags: is reporting on an interesting situation. Fallon Fox scored a quick 39 second knockout over opponent Ericka Newsome on Saturday. That win makes her a perfect 2-0 in her pro career. The controversy surrounding Fox is that she had gender reassignment surgery in 2006, making her the only known transgender fighter in MMA.

The Florida commission approved her license based on the belief that she was already approved by the California State Athletic Commission. But that isn’t quite the case. Fox believed she was licensed by CSAC, but they say her application is still under review.

It looks like the confusion came when CSAC mailed Fox a receipt for the $60 she paid to apply for her license. Apparently she thought this receipt was confirmation that she was approved. Florida didn’t do much digging on this matter as they also believed that the CSAC license was valid.

Fox’s next scheduled bout is April 20. The current licensing issues put that date in jeopardy, so we’ll have to keep an eye out on the results. Regardless of the commission’s decision on this matter, the fact that Fox was born a man will surely raise some eyebrows and controversy.
