meatheadAnd the gavel has dropped. Yesterday we reported that Matt Mitrione made some pretty offensive comments toward transgender fighter Fallon Fox, which went way beyond what any normal person would consider acceptable. Among Meathead’s derogatory comments was the statement that Fox is a “disgusting freak.”

As we predicted, Mitrione will face a penalty for his shallow remarks. The UFC didn’t waste any time suspending Mitrione and releasing a statement of their own.

“The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on “the MMA Hour”.

“The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and – as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated.

“The UFC is a friend and ally of the LGBT community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect.”

Well, this certainly isn’t a surprise. Mitrione’s opinions on whether Fox should be allowed fight really isn’t the point. What is the point is that he pretty much offended everyone in the LGBT community. The UFC later confirmed that part of Mitrione’s punishment would likely include some form of community service which would benefit the targeted group.

Not much needs to be said about this. No matter what your opinion of Fox’s quest to fight, it’s hard to imagine anyone defending his comments. But I’ve been shocked many times before.
