TUF 17 Finale Biggest Loser: Uriah Hall Hype Train screeches to a halt

MMA: UFC TUF 17 Finale-Hall vs GastelumWell that might have been the fastest rise and fall in UFC history. I know fans are fickle, but this one was a complete 180 that took all of a few days to fall apart. The hype train for Uriah Hall kept escalating throughout season 17. With every knockout victory, his legend seemed to grow more and more. After his final KO over Dylan, which got him to the finals, fans were running “Who would win?” polls, between Hall and Anderson Silva.

Okay, that’s ridiculous, but that’s what I saw online. All that came to an abrupt halt when he was outworked by severe underdog, Kelvin Gastelum Saturday night.  Hall had every imaginable advantage in that fight—size, strength, striking, athleticism, aggressiveness and more. But Gastelum beat him. And now Hall is just like every other promising prospect who may never advance past mid tier.

What’s worse is what people are saying about him now. Obviously the term overrated is coming up quite a bit. Fans are saying he choked and that he looked past Gastelum. Hell even Dana White said he broke down mentally. That’s not a good thing for Hall.

The last thing a fighter wants to be knows as is a head case, or a guy who failed to live up to expectations. Even though those expectations set upon him were unrealistic, losing to Gastelum—who most people consider a “grinder”—is a far cry from being ready for anyone even close to the top 15 or 20 middleweights.

Saturday morning, Hall was one easy victory away from being crowned a legitimate contender. By Saturday night, his future was being questioned by everyone.
