maynardgrantPart of the aftermath of UFC on Fox was that Dana White announced the next title contender for Ben Henderson. The UFC 160 matchup between Gray Maynard and T.J. Grant will get the nod. So what do fans think about that announcement?

Maynard is a legitimate long-time contender with 2 title shots under his belt already—a draw and a loss to former champion Frankie Edgar. He’s currently the #3 contender in UFC’s latest rankings, although it doesn’t look like last night’s event has been reflected yet. Grant is currently ranked #7.

Grant has been undefeated since his drop to lightweight in 2011 with four straight wins. That streak alone is noteworthy, although it’s hard to ignore the incredible jump in competition this fight will pose. His wins have come against four unranked opponents—Matt Wiman, Evan Dunham, Carlos Prater and Shane Roller. Maynard has been knocking off top 10 fighters for his entire career.

Ironically, Anthony Pettis’ decision to drop down to 145 to fight Jose Aldo probably prevented him from getting the next shot at Henderson, opening the door for Maynard and Grant. And should we even bring up the residual effects that decision means to guys like Chan Sung Jung and Ricardo Lamas, among others? Nah, let’s leave it alone.
