Tito Threatens to “come out of Retirement” to Stop Jon Jones from beating his Streak

titoShould we assume Tito Ortiz was joking? Okay, probably. But why would I pass up the opportunity to throw a few jabs in Tito’s direction? With that in mind, let’s make fun of The Huntington Beach Bad Boy for his tweet over the weekend, claiming that he might return to the octagon just to beat Jon Jones.

His exact tweet was: Well I may have to come out of retirement to beat @JonnyBones I can’t let I’m beat my record. @Punishment99 #ufc159 #UFConXboxLIVE

The record he’s referring to is of course the record for most consecutive title defenses. Tito has held the record (of five) for about a decade. Jones tied that mark with his latest defense against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 over the weekend.

So let’s look past the fact that Tito has no chance of beating Jones—ever, ever, ever. EVER! Instead let’s go back a step and look at how ridiculous it would be for Tito to even get the chance to be in the same cage with Jones. Here are some quick facts about Ortiz…

  • He has ONE win since December of 2006
  • He has only ONE win in his last 9 fights
  • His official record is 1-7-1 in his last 9 fights
  • Before defeating Ryan Bader in 2011, his last 2 wins were against the 99 year old Ken Shamrock
  • Before that, his last win was vs. Forrest Griffin at UFC 59 when Jones was still  in high school
  • The 1st win of “the streak” was against Yuki Kondo at UFC 29 when Jones was 13
  • The 4th win of “the streak” was a decision against Vlad Matyushenko – Jones beat in 1:52 of the 1st round almost 10 years later.

Whether Tito’s tweet was a joke or not, it’s still insane to think of him beating anyone, let alone the seemingly invincible young champ. Keep dreaming Tito.
