‘Plan B’ Roy Nelson could create unfortunate Deja Vu (x2) for UFC 160

roy-nelson-belly-rubMark Hunt’s visa issues have brought my excitement level to a screeching halt when it comes to UFC 160’s dual heavyweight headliners. Sure, everyone is saying they are “confident” Hunt will still make it to the U.S., but let’s face it; this isn’t good news. In Hunt’s absence, the backup plan is Roy Nelson, who just sent Cheick Kongo into never-never land.

So potentially, we could have a couple heavyweight main event bouts that look like this” Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Junior Dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson. If those fights sound a little familiar to you, join the club. Cain already destroyed Bigfoot about a year ago; and JDS already bludgeoned Big Country too. Both fights were not only lopsided, but they wouldn’t ever warrant a rematch in any universe.

So now, UFC 160—which started as a sure fire hard-hitting double main event—is starting to look like it has potential to be an unnecessary re-run of past fights. If that wasn’t enough, it would almost certainly set the stage for yet another Cain/JDS fight—which would be their third.

While the heavyweight division remains the most exciting to most fans due to the incredible probability of a highlight reel finish, another Cain/Dos Santos fight would show exactly how shallow the weight class really is.

I’m not completely down on UFC 160, don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t even down on Bigfoot being named title challenger a while back. But now that we’re staring two rematches in the face, I sure wish we could shuffle things up a little. Velasquez vs. Nelson and Dos Santos vs. Silva sound a whole lot better in my opinion. But then, I’m just a fan.
