Heavyweight News — Barnett returns to UFC; Nelson Added to UFC 161 Main Card

JoshBarnettEstherLinAOL_crop_exactWe got some dual heavyweight news late last night and into this morning involving colorful bug guys, Josh Barnett and Roy Nelson. No, they aren’t fighting each other unfortunately—they are two separate stories. It seems Barnett is finally returning to the UFC after a lengthy absence, and Big Country will be stepping in to help salvage a PPV.

Let’s start with Barnett. The former UFC champion hasn’t fought in the promotion since winning the title in 2002. If you’ve been around that long, you know that Barnett defeated Randy Couture to win the belt at UFC 36, only to be stripped of the title for failing a drug test afterwards. He’s spent the last decade traveling the world in various promotions proving to be one of the top fighters on earth. Now he’ll get to prove it beyond a doubt with his brand new multi-fight deal.

As for Nelson, it looks like he’s trying to help out the UFC by stepping in to fight on the unexpectedly depleted UFC 161 event. With the injury to headliner Renan Barao leaving the event without a main event, the UFC had to jumble a few things around. Nelson has agreed to fight Stipe Miocic to bulk up (figuratively and literally) the 6 fight main card.

There’s always something a little “extra” when it comes to the heavyweights and both of these announcements have to be viewed as good news. Nelson has become a major fan favorite due to his appearance, attitude and mostly his freakish penchant for 1st round knockouts.

Likewise, Barnett is a controversial figure in the sport, but really, isn’t 11 years a long enough probation period? Let’s see The Warmaster throw down with Frank Mir and some of the other top UFC heavies. Personally I can’t wait to see him in the mix.
