Headliners announced for UFC 164 and FS1

SOnnenVIG1A couple events just got headliners. UFC on Fox Sports 1 will get the heavily rumored showdown between Chael Sonnen and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua on August 17. And the lightweight title will be on the line in Milwaukee. It was just announced that Ben Henderson will put his title on the line against newly appointed top contender T.J. Grant at UFC 164.

Sonnen publicly challenged Shogun right after it was discovered that Rua’s original opponent, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira had to pull out of their UFC 161 bout. Problems with Sonnen’s visa kept him from that event, but the fight stuck, and will take place in Boston and headline the new Fox channel’s first event.

Neither fighter is on what you’d call a tear. Rua has been alternating wins and losses since 2009 and is really as unpredictable inside the cage as you can get. He was perhaps at the top of his game in his two fights against Lyoto Machida, which ultimately saw Shogun capture the UFC belt.

Likewise, Sonnen is on a 2 fight skid. He’s lost in back to back title fights—first with Anderson Silva at middleweight; then against Jon Jones at light heavyweight.

For Henderson, a successful night in Milwaukee would break the record for most consecutive lightweight title defenses (4). He’s currently tied with BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar, although Edgar gets an asterisk due to one of his defenses being a draw. Challenger Grant is riding a 5 fight winning streak since dropping to lightweight, where he seems to at the top of his game.

Shameless plug alert!!! Be ready for Sonnen’s fight with this American Gangster t-shirt, available in white or black…
