Did Werdum finally move himself up to #1 contender?

????????Fabricio Werdum might have been the most underrated heavyweight in the UFC leading into his fight with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira over the weekend. But now he might have finally won over the nay-sayers with his 2nd submission win over the legend. Is he next in line? He thinks so…and it’s hard to argue.

Perhaps “underrated” isn’t the best term. Maybe “under-appreciated” is better. Whatever you call it, the past few weeks I’ve personally heard arguments for Daniel Cormier, Roy Nelson and Alistair Overeem all being most deserving of the next title fight following the Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos fight next month. Add that with Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva’s recent shot at the title, and Werdum seemed like the forgotten man of the division.

Could the win over Minotauro finally elevate Werdum to top contender? I think so. He’s 3-0 in the UFC. Two of those wins came against the #5 (Nelson) and #8 (Nogueira) fighters in the world. He’s also defeated #4 (Bigfoot) and #6 (Overeem); not to mention the great Fedor Emelianenko. That’s a track record as good as any heavyweight around.

With that in mind, Werdum is hoping for the next shot at the champ, whoever it may be, and possibly another gig as coach on TUF: Mexico. Werdum speaks Spanish and if Cain wins his upcoming bout, it could set up a TUF pairing with Werdum. If that happens, Werdum will gladly wait for his crack at the UFC title.
