Dana White says GSP vs. Hendricks on tap for October — and NOT in Canada

johnyhendricksThis bit of news should make some fans happy. Despite rumors of possible superfights, it looks like Johny Hendricks will get his chance to fight for the welterweight title after all. Dana White spilled the beans to UFC Central via Twitter. The plan is for Hendricks to face champion Georges St-Pierre sometime in October.

This isn’t a huge surprise, although for Hendricks, it’s got to be a relief to have this fight in his sights. The only surprise is that it will evidently not take place in Canada. UFC 165 is set for Toronto, where many people assumed GSP would be the natural choice for headliner. That won’t happen, since White specifically said GSP vs. Hendricks will happen in October.

The announcement was also news to Hendricks, who like many of us, rely on Twitter for breaking stories. Among the “fans” commenting on UFC Central’s tweet was “Big Rig” himself, saying “that’s pretty sweet” and adding hash-tag #Last2Know.

If this comes to fruition—and we have no reason to think it won’t—it marks something interesting. St-Pierre hasn’t fought outside his home country of Canada since UFC 111 way back in early 2010. Assuming they come up with a decent main event for Toronto, this is actually a welcome sight in my opinion. The UFC is a global sport and GSP—arguably their biggest star—shouldn’t be presented as a guy who only fights with a “home field” advantage.
