rodriguesUrurahy Rodrigues fought in Bellator earlier this year—a 3rd round TKO loss to Clay Harvison. He also owns an MMA gym outside of Atlanta. It is being reported that on Wednesday, there was an incident in the strip mall that houses Rodrigues’ gym. Apparently, four men charged into the jewelry store next door and began smashing display cases with sledgehammers, and attempted to steal the jewelry.

That’s’ when store owner, Mitch Mobley intervened momentarily. One of the culprits turned and shot Mobley, killing the 45 year old. About the time the shots were fired, Rodrigues began to react. Also at that moment, the four men panicked and ran began to run away. Rodrigues pursued the shooter, 16 year old Eric Billings.

He chased down Billings, tackled him and restrained him in a choke hold until police arrived. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt released Billings only when police showed up to take him into custody. The teen is being charged with murder, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He will be charged as an adult and faces the death penalty.

A second member of the group was arrested yesterday, while the other two who ran from the store as well as the driver are still at large.  Thankfully Rodrigues was able to apprehend the shooter in this tragedy. He has also turned over the surveillance footage from his gym in hopes of capturing the remaining criminals.
