Dana White responds to low salary issues: “No more fucking bonuses”

DanaVIGThanks to a lot of debate about fighter pay recently by Tim Kennedy, Jon Fitch and others, Dana White was compelled to discuss what is being perceived as low fighter pay, especially among the lower level fighters. He seemed a bit miffed, but really…isn’t he always?

White told MMA Junkie that they were working out a plan that would address the issue of low fighter salaries, especially with “lower-level guys.” I’m not sure if it’s exactly what the fighters were hoping for.

“You don’t like the structure? All right, we’ll pay the lower-level guys more money – no more fucking bonuses,” Dana White said. “You guys come in, you negotiate your contracts, and we do away with all bonuses. That’s what I’m thinking about doing.”

“The bonuses are something we’ve been doing out of the kindness of our fucking heart,” White continued. “It was something we liked to do. Apparently, people don’t like it. They want the lower-level guys to get paid more money.”

Some fighters are still making what seem to be incredibly low salaries—preliminary fighters can make in the $6000/6000 range. That figure seems insanely low. Of course there are always sponsors and discretionary bonuses that are kind of “under the table.” But those don’t really trickle down to the preliminary fighters usually.

It’s often true that the squeaky wheel gets the oil. So when fighters keep talking about low pay, eventually it will be addressed. The question is, will it be addressed in the manner they hope?

Why “either or” instead of “both and”? Maybe a good compromise would be do 100,000 in bonuses and 100,000 in raises for lower level fights! However, I still think a big part of the problem is management… the UFC can’t have fight events without fighters. You don’t have to have a union to unite and make demands! I have seen the list of salaries. Seems to me that even though some guys are not making all that much, other guys are getting way more than I would have expected. Also, I know lower level guys/gals, not even in the UFC, who are kicking butt and making bank because they fully capitalize on opportunities provided them because they are athletes involved in the fastest growing sport on the planet! On the flipside, MMA is still a super young sport and the UFC has single handedly taken this illegal and controversial fringe sport to the international mainstream… nobody can possibly know what kind of ongoing investment that requires! The UFC has created a platform for athletes to compete, make money and be a part of history! Even the lower level guys are making more than me, traveling the world, doing what they love to do!
