matt_serra_ufc_belt-27060With the UFC in a rare hiatus from their almost continuous airing of The Ultimate Fighter series one after another, I thought it was a good time to do a little review of how well the show has done in producing top tier, title worthy fighters. We all know that there have been three TUF alums (all winners of the reality show) who have gone on to capture the UFC title—Forrest Griffin (season 1), Rashad Evans (season 2) and Matt Serra (season 4).

But let’s take a season-by-season look at how TUF has affected the UFC’s title picture over the course of the series, including title eliminator fights.

TUF 1:
Forrest Griffin vs. Rampage Jackson, LHW title – WIN.
Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley, WW title eliminator — WIN.
Josh Koscheck vs. Georges St. Pierre, WW title – LOSS.
Diego Sanchez vs. B.J Penn, LW title – LOSS.
Nate Quarry vs. Rich Franklin, MW title – LOSS.
Kenny Florian vs. Sean Sherk, LW title – LOSS.
Kenny Florian vs. B.J Penn, LW title – LOSS.
Kenny Florian vs. Jose Aldo, FW title – LOSS.
Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard, LW title eliminator – LOSS.
Mike Swick vs. Dan Hardy, WW title eliminator – LOSS.

TUF 2:
Rashad Evans vs. Chick Liddell, LHW title eliminator — WIN. (although not officially a title eliminator, Evans was awarded a title shot immediately after defeating Liddell, so I’ll include it here)
Rashad Evans vs. Forrest Griffin, LHW title – WIN.
Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis, LHW title eliminator — WIN.
Rashad Evans vs. Jon Jones, LHW title – LOSS.
Joe Stevenson vs. B.J Penn, (vacant) LW title – LOSS.

TUF 3:
Michael Bisping vs. Dan Henderson, MW title eliminator – LOSS.
Michael Bisping vs. Chael Sonnen, MW title eliminator – LOSS.
Michael Bisping vs. Vitor Belfort, MW title eliminator – LOSS.

TUF 4:
Matt Serra vs. Chris Lytle, WW title eliminator (TUF 4 championship) — WIN.
Matt Serra vs. Georges St. Pierre, WW title – WIN.
Travis Lutter vs. Patrick Cote, MW title eliminator (TUF 4 championship) — WIN.
Travis Lutter vs. Anderson Silva, WW title – LOSS (turned into a non-title fight after Lutter missed weight)
Patrick Cote vs. Anderson Silva, MW title – LOSS.

TUF 5:
Gray Maynard vs Kenny Florian, LW title eliminator — WIN.
Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar, LW title – DRAW.
Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar, LW title – LOSS.
Gray Maynard vs. TJ Grant, LW title eliminator – LOSS.
Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller, LW title eliminator — WIN.
Nate Diaz vs. Benson Henderson, LW title – LOSS.

TUF 6 – TUF 7:
None

TUF 8:
Ryan Bader vs. Jon Jones, LHW title eliminator – LOSS (this was not officially a title eliminator, although it turned into one for Jones afterwards due to injury. I’ll include it here anyway).

TUF 9:
None

TUF 10:Roy Nelson vs. Junior Dos Santos, HW title eliminator — LOSS.

TUF 11 – TUF 13:
None

TUF 14:
John Dodson vs. Jussier Formiga, FlyW title eliminator — WIN
John Dodson vs. Demetrious Johnson, FlyW title – LOSS.

TUF 15 – TUF 18:
None

I was fairly generous with my list above. Some of these fights weren’t officially Title Eliminators, but I wanted to be as thorough as I could. A few questions. Are these results about what you’d expect from the reality series? Do you attribute the severe drop in entries to the fact that newer seasons haven’t given their fighters enough time to get to the upper echelon? Or is it because of a drop in talent on the shows? Lastly, did I miss anyone?
