Jon Jones says Cormier is “irrelevant, out of shape, not even top 5”

jonjonesUFC Light Heavyweight Champ Jon Jones is tired of answering questions about Daniel Cormier. So while Cormier—currently a heavyweight—is asking for an immediate title shot when he enters the division, Jones is firing insults that poke at DC’s skill level, work ethic and conditioning.

“I don’t think he wants to work hard,” Jones told Gracie Mag. “I just think he wants to be famous. I hate answering questions about him. He’s just not relevant to me. There are so many great fighters in the light heavyweight division. He’s not even top five in his division.”

In fairness, Cormier is currently ranked #2 HW contender to Cain Velasquez’s title, behind only Junior Dos Santos. He’s also undefeated in 12 MMA fights, including big wins over Antonio Silva, and former UFC champs Josh Barnett and Frank Mir. So Jones’ assessment might be a little inaccurate.

But what does he think of Cormier’s skills? Not much. “He has short reach, bad cardio. He looked terrible in his last fight. It’s like I’m not worried about him at all.”

I’m not sure if Cormier’s cardio has been much of a problem in the past. He went five full rounds with Barnett and looked more than capable in the later rounds. But that reach. Jones has a point there, doesn’t he? About 12 inches shorter than Bones’ reach, that could pose a major problem if the two were to meet. How will he get near him?
