SOnnenVIG1You gotta give Chael Sonnen some serious credit for trying. Somehow Sonnen finds a way to stay in the headlines no matter what he does inside the cage. And honestly, he’s building a collection of title shots and main events like Amanda Bynes accumulates crazy. Sonnen is once again angling for a title.

Here’s his plan. Responding to Vitor Belfort’s idea that the two fight in a catchweight bout, Sonnen said “sure,” with a few extra suggestions of his own. Chael wants the fight to take place at UFC 168 at the big year-end show. And here’s the kicker. Sonnen wants it to be a middleweight title eliminator.

Of course this fight still isn’t a done deal by any stretch. In fact, it makes no sense whatsoever if Sonnen is defeated by Mauricio Rua in a couple weeks. But if Sonnen is able to pull this off, let’s look at what he’s been able to accomplish.

First came a title shot against Anderson Silva—which he lost. Then came two important divisional wins against Stann and Bisping. Then another title fight with Silva—which he lost. And then a surprising light heavyweight title fight against Jon Jones—which he lost. Now he’s facing Shogun in yet another main event on Fox’s brand new sports network.

It remains to be seen if this scenario will ever come to fruition but really this guy is remarkable. He has a 2-3 record and still keeps putting himself into contention for more major fights against champions.
