Lyoto Machida drops to 185 — will face Tim Kennedy at ‘Fight for the Troops’

Lyoto-MachidaHere’s one that blindsided me. Former light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida, has decided to drop to 185 after all. And his first opponent at middleweight will be Tim Kennedy. Not only will “The Dragon” be in a brand new division, but he’ll also likely play the heel in this fight—it will take place on the UFC’s next Fight for the Troops event.

Kennedy of course is a military veteran and makes sense to fight on this card. He’s coming off a win in his UFC debut against Roger Gracie last month; but was denied a shot at contender Vitor Belfort when Belfort said ‘no thanks.’

Machida is an interesting figure at 185. Like many weight class shifts, it kind of reinvents his career after a tough decision loss to Phil Davis. There are certainly several nice matchups for Machida at 185, and if his buddy Anderson Silva isn’t able to regain his old belt from Chris Weidman, who knows? Maybe Machida will step into a title shot soon.

According to Machida’s dietician, the key to dropping the extra 20 pounds will be drinking even more urine.
