Pettis/Aldo not happening yet; T.J. Grant will get next shot

pettis1A couple bits of news regarding new lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis. First, he was injured in his title win over Benson Henderson and will require about 7 or 8 weeks off to let his sprained knee mend properly. That really blows, but I guess it could be a lot worse (Dominick Cruz anyone???). Secondly, we already know his next opponent, and it’s not featherweight champ Jose Aldo.

Instead it has been announced that #1 contender T.J. Grant will get the nod. Dana White confirmed the fight and I’m sure Grant fans everywhere breathed a sigh of relief. We had much discussion on this topic on our site as well as our Facebook page. I—along with some readers—felt Grant was the best choice; while others felt very strongly that a superfight with Aldo was the way to go.

I’ll just say this again. I love the idea of superfights; and the idea of Pettis vs. Aldo. But Pettis just won the belt, which means there are several good fights out there for him—fights we haven’t seen yet. And the fact that Grant was already promised the title fight—although promises have been as good as a coin flip in the past—weighs into it a little as well.

On the other side, Aldo also has legitimate contenders at featherweight. He hasn’t run the table yet, and that’s in large part due to former lightweights like Frankie Edgar and Kenny Florian getting the royal treatment and leapfrogging other fighters. That extra time means even more challengers have surfaced—Lamas, Swanson, Mendes and others come to mind.

So now we know what’s up with Pettis. Since this has been a controversial topic, I’ll ask again…what are your thoughts?
