A bunch of random facts about UFC 165

Posted: September 17, 2013 in Commentary/Opinion

breaking-badUFC 165 is this weekend and there are plenty of interesting—and uninteresting facts—about the fighters involved. Want to hear some? Well, you don’t get to make that decision any more than you get to decide whether or not you see promo after promo of ‘Low Winter Sun’ during commercial breaks of ‘Breaking Bad.’ Just sit back and enjoy.

  • Jon Jones will be attempting to defend his light heavyweight title for a record 6th time. That would break the tie with Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz.
  • If all the hype is accurate, Alexander Gustafsson is really tall, which will cause all sorts of issues for Jones.
  • However, if all the photos are accurate, Alexander Gustafsson is nearly identical in height to Jones and probably won’t matter in the least.
  • Interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao is on a 20 fight winning streak. He’s actually never lost a fight (29-0, 1 NC) in his career, which makes him even tougher to finish than Gus Fring.
  • Matt Mitrione has 6 UFC wins—none of the fighters he defeated are still in the UFC.
  • Mitrione’s opponent, Brendan Schaub has 5 UFC wins—only one of those fighters is still in the UFC (Gabriel Gonzaga).
  • Barao’s average fight time is 15:37, 5th highest in UFC history. By comparison, that’s not even close to the amount of time Jesse Pinkman has spent inside Todd’s underground cage in the New Mexico desert.
  • Costa Philippou and Francis Carmont will square off as the two highest rated fighters in middleweight history in takedown defense.
  • Roland Delorme has attempted 6 submissions in his UFC career—4th on the all-time BW list.
  • But wait! Delorme’s opponent Alex Caceres is 1st on the same list, with 11.
  • Only Matt Hamill, Vladimir Matyushenko and Shogun Rua have fought both Jones and Gustafsson.
  • This is the first event since UFC 152—almost exactly a year ago—with more than one belt on the line (Jones vs. Belfort and Mighty Mouse vs. Benavides).
  • Before that it was almost exactly a year prior at UFC 136 (Edgar vs. Maynard and Aldo vs. Florian)
  • In ten career fights (all wins), Dustin Kimura has racked up 7 submission victories, including and 5 different submissions (RNC, triangle, achilles lock, arm bar, guillotine). Ironically he has ZERO victories via kimura.
  • Curtain-jerker Nando Guelmino is the only UFC fighter with victories over Sascha Weinpolter AND Jan Kirschbaum!!!
  • Co-main eventer, Eddie Wineland became the very first WEC bantamweight champion back in 2006.
  • Pat Healy has more career fights (46) than any fighter on the card.
  • It is NOT true that Stephen Thompson officially changed his nickname from “Flynn” to “Wonderboy” upon entering the UFC.
