BFFs 4Ever — Anderson Silva says he’d retire before fighting friends

Machida-vs-SilvaOn a recent UFC stop over in Brazil, number one contender Anderson Silva (that still sounds weird) stated in a UFC 168 Q&A session that he would retire from MMA if the UFC ever tried to force a match between him and his urine-chugging BFF Lyoto Machida.  He also included teammate and BFF runner up Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza on the list of deal breaking match ups.
“I’m a man with honor. I’d never fight Jacare or Lyoto. I’d even stop fighting just not to fight them. If we get to a point where we’d have to fight, I’d even give up the title.”
Silva isn’t the only fighter who refuses to fight a teammate.  Daniel Cormier has made statements in the past that he would not fight his friend and training partner, Cain Velasquez. Perhaps they’ve learned second hand from Rashad Evans what happens when teammates fight each other. Evans made it clear in an ESPN.com interview in August that he would not fight any of his Blackzillian teammates, adding “I made that mistake before, and I won’t do that again. I lost a lot of relationships because I did that before.”
Many fans are critical of these refusals, pointing to other sports where brothers play against brothers (i.e. Peyton and Eli Manning). Those sports seem to make the rivalry less personal. Tossing a football around on opposing teams is different from beating the crap out of someone who was just at your weekend bbq. On the other hand, how many opportunities is a fighter willing to miss in the name of friendship?
