Bad Call-Out of the Day?

ErickSilvaLet me say this first: I like Erick Silva. Let me say this second: I hate this call-out.

A major prospect when he entered the UFC, Silva has seen his share of ups and downs since entering the big show. Still, he remains a viable guy in the division and most consider him a fighter with star potential in the long term. At 3-3 in the UFC, and a recent knockout loss Dong Hyun Kim in his last outing, Silva needs to regroup.

Instead, he decided to call out a guy well above him in the rankings—Demian Maia. Maia is also coming off a loss in his last bout; albeit a more high profile one. Common belief is that a win over Jake Shields could have earned Maia a shot at the title. He’s still a top-of-the-line welterweight.  Which is exactly why I’m confused by Silva’s strategy.

Does anyone think Silva needs that fight? When I said he needs to regroup, that means he needs a couple ordinary, run-of-the-mill wins. Get back in the scoring column man. If he runs off two straight wins to mid-level UFC welterweights, he’ll be right back in line for a bigger fight. Right now, I’m really afraid that a fight with Maia is a loss for just about anybody outside the top 3.

Am I way off base here? Does anyone like this call-out for Erick Silva?
