cain-velasquezUPDATE: Dana White is contradicting yesterday’s report that Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum would headline UFC 172 in Mexico. Instead White said that the champ is nursing an injury, which will delay his next fight indefinitely. According to the new report from Yahoo Sports, Velasquez is having an MRI to determine if he needs surgery on his shoulder. Whether it’s surgery or just rehab will go a long way in determining how long Velasquez will be shelved.

Here’s the original report from yesterday…

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will be getting the GSP treatment for his next fight. He will be fighting in Mexico, which will give him a distinct home field advantage for his next fight in April. Fabricio Werdum will be the challenger.

The fight will take place in Mexico City and will headline UFC 172. Velasquez is fresh off his 2nd straight dismantling of Junior Dos Santos. Werdum will unbelievably be Velasquez’s first fight against someone other than Dos Santos or Antonio Silva since October 2010 when he defeated Brock Lesnar at UFC 121. That’s quite a span.

Werdum is now 3-0 in the UFC with wins over Roy Nelson, Mike Russow and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. His most noteworthy win came in Strikeforce when he became the first man to (legitimately) defeat the great Fedor Emelianenko.
