Pettis injury causes big shuffle for ‘UFC on Fox’ and ‘TUF Finale’

pettis1This is about the last thing we wanted to hear. New UFC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis will be unable to defend his title on UFC on Fox 9 in December. Showtime was expected to face Josh Thomson in his first title defense, but a knee injury has forced him off the card.

In its place, Demetrious Johnson’s flyweight title bout with Joseph Benavides will slide over and headline the Fox event, leaving Nate Diaz vs. Gray Maynard as the main event for the TUF 18 Finale.

All the shuffling aside, this is a big blow. Pettis has been on an incredible tear in the UFC, finishing contenders Joe Lauzon and Donald Cerrone in less than a round; followed by making quick work of then-champ Benson Henderson, also in the 1st round. Literally the only question on Pettis has been his health. Only 26 years old, he has seen his fair share of injuries already.

So far, there’s no word on how long Pettis might be sidelined, but more information should be revealed soon.
