askrenBellator just released their undefeated, reigning welterweight champion. Ben Askren is now officially a free agent after his employer made it official that he would not be re-signed by the company. That means the former Olympian can sign with the UFC—or anyone else, for that matter.

This move isn’t completely shocking, as Askren has had a somewhat contentious relationship with Bjorn Rebney at times in the past. Probably most interesting are the comments Rebney has made about Askren, which can be categorized as “backhanded compliments” at best.

“I’ve said it many times, Ben’s a completely one-dimensional fighter who is utterly dominant in that dimension,” Rebney said.

While Rebney’s assessment of Askren’s abilities are pretty accurate, you’d still expect a more glowing recommendation about the guy who has proven to be virtually unbeatable by any of Bellator’s other welterweights. Isn’t it Rebney who insists that the bet fighters aren’t always in the UFC?

Either way, Bellator has waived any matching rights they owned with Askren, which means he’s free to sign with the highest bidder. The question is, does the UFC want him? He’s the type of guy who would cause headaches for Dana White and fans, especially if he started manhandling top contenders.

If White hated Jon Fitch for his “boring” fighting style, Askren could be White’s worst nightmare inside the octagon.
