Opinion: Georges St-Pierre doesn’t “owe” Dana White ANYTHING

GSPafterhendricksDana White is an emotional guy. That’s probably why he’s an effective leader for the UFC. But sometimes, he goes way too far. This weekend was a perfect example. His biggest star and longest reigning champion earned a controversial split decision victory over Johny Hendricks. When the fans showed outrage at the call, White—the president of the company—joined in.

Not only did he bash the judges and their decision, but he took it one unnecessary step farther when GSP said he needed a break. That’s when the wheels fell off. Let’s take a look.

After going through the toughest title defense of his career, St-Pierre took the microphone and announced that he had some issues to deal with and even hinted that his sanity and well-being were at stake. With that in mind, he wanted a break. Instead of praising the guy who has been a loyal champion and proven marquis draw for the UFC for years, White went ballistic.

“You don’t just say, ‘Hey, I’m going to take a while off, and maybe I’ll be back and maybe I won’t,’” White said. “You owe it to the fans, you owe it to that belt, you owe it to this company and to Johny Hendricks to give him that opportunity to fight again. Unless you’re going to retire.”

Really? So Dana White is going to tell GSP that he doesn’t have a choice? He’s going to tell him that his personal issues are less important than fulfilling some type of made-up obligation GSP has. St-Pierre OWES Dana White? Absurd.

Whatever anyone thinks St-Pierre owes the company, I’d say he’s paid them back with interest. He’s the biggest draw in the company and the cover boy for the UFC when dealing with the public. His crossover appeal is rivaled only by former stars, Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture. His public demeanor and his championship aura is what others should strive to be.

In a sport that is still battling public opinion every day, GSP has always been exactly the type of ambassador MMA needs—a well-spoken, intelligent, anti-animal. I don’t think he OWES anyone anything.
