rich-franklin-american-fighterLong time fan favorite and former middleweight champion Rich Franklin has been thinking about his future lately. “Ace” has decided that he’s going to hang up his gloves following his next fight after a lengthy career. Inching closer to 40 years old, Franklin’s mind was made up when he realized he’s no longer a top contender for a UFC title.

“I lost my last fight, and that really kind of solidified my decision to make this my last fight, coming up,” Franklin told Inside MMA. “I know that that took me out of title contention, and so for me to actually get back in the title hunt again would be a couple years’ worth of work.”

Franklin captured the world title at UFC 53 against Evan Tanner, and went on to defend the belt twice more. He eventually lost tot Anderson Silva at UFC 64 via 1st round knockout. Since then, he’s gone on to beat names like Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva (twice). His losses have come against equally  impressive names—Cung Le, Forrest Griffin, Vitor Belfort, Dan Henderson and a second bout with Anderson.

There’s currently no word on who Franklin’s final bout will be against; or when it will be. Considering his history with the company—and his reputation as a favorite of fans and Dana White—I’m sure he will receive serious Hall of Fame consideration.
