Jake Ellenberger wants Carlos Condit in Dallas

jake-ellenbergerTwo of our favorite fighters in our favorite UFC weight class are Carlos Condit and Jake Ellenberger. They are also two of the only top welterweights without a scheduled opponent right now. So doesn’t it make sense that these two contenders should face each other? Ellenberger thinks so; and so do a lot of fans.

“Everybody in the Top 10 is really locked up it seems like right now,” Ellenberger told MMA Junkie. “I was getting overwhelmed with people messaging me saying, ‘You and Condit, we want to see you guys fight again.’ Definitely.”

It wouldn’t be the first time these two have squared off. In 2009, Ellenberger stepped in on short notice to fight Condit when Chris Lytle got injured. It was Ellenberger’s UFC debut. He was edged out in a close split decision that night, but says that’s nothing but a distant memory to him.

Now he’s more interested in booking a top fight to re-insert himself in the title picture. He’s been close before, and a win over Condit would put him back in the mix. While Ellenberger is shooting for UFC 171 in Dallas, it remains to be seen what Condit’s schedule is.

If it does happen—and it should—one thing’s for sure. The rematch will have slightly more implications than their first fight when it played 3rd fiddle to Nate Diaz/Melvin Guillard and Gray Maynard/Roger Huerta.
