tyron-woodley-sherdogWe’ve been talking quite a bit about the UFC’s welterweight division lately, thanks in part to news that Georges St-Pierre was relinquishing his title. Now another interesting fight has been announced. Former interim champ Carlos Condit will face Tyron Woodley at UFC 171. Condit was left without an opponent when Matt Brown had to back out of their UFC on Fox 9 bout.

Woodley had been pushing for the matchup. Although he’s currently unranked, he’s definitely a fighter on the upswing. A win over an elite level fighter like Condit would almost certainly propel Woodley well into the top 10, if not the top 5.

After Brown pulled out, you’ll remember that Woodley wasn’t the first choice. Nick Diaz was offered the fight—a rematch from his UFC 143 loss to Condit. Diaz didn’t bite, leaving the opening.

Woodley rebounded from a loss to Jake Shields with an emphatic knockout of former contender Josh Koscheck last month at UFC 167. Condit represents Woodley’s toughest test as a pro.
