2013 VigilanteMMA Year-End Awards — Fight of the Year

wandstannContinuing our multi-part series of year end awards for 2013, we bring you our choice for Fight of the Year. The one that was ultimately selected is without question my favorite fight of the year. Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann was non-stop action and had more twists and turns than an M. Night Shyamalan film (before he got shitty).

The 1st round was probably the best round of the year. Both fighters got floored and almost finished the fight. Much to the shock of the audience—me included—it didn’t end. In fact, I’d say it refused to end. Stann had Silva all but finished TWICE in that round, only to see Wand miraculously get back up both times and knock down Stann.

Another element is that I’m a fan of nostalgia. With that in mind, it was a real treat to see Wanderlei scale the cage after a devastating knockout victory in Japan, just like we saw many times back in his Pride days.

Let me tell you about my DVR. I’m a storage space miser. Once I watch a recorded television show or sporting event, I wipe it off my DVR immediately. I can’t stand when my storage dips below 75%. UFC on Fuel 8 is still on my DVR. That fight is one I would show my non-MMA friends to demonstrate how awesome the sport can be.

Other Fights Considered: Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson, Mark Hunt vs. Stefan Struve, Mark Hunt vs. Antonio Silva, Gilbert Melendez vs. Diego Sanchez, Cat Zignano vs. Miesha Tate

Our other Year-End Awards already announced:
Breakthrough Fighter of the Year
Female Fighter of the Year
