Retired Chris Leben admits he spent all his money on drugs

leben1Chris Leben announced his retirement from MMA following his latest loss in the octagon to Uriah Hall. According to Leben, perhaps the lifestyle he was leading as a fighter is best left in the past. The Crippler now says he spent all his money as a fighter on illegal drugs.

“The bottom line is, especially with all the illegal drugs, I was spending all the money I was making anyways,” he said.

Fans knew about Leben’s troubles, but they grew to love him anyway for his fighting style. “The way I fought, I didn’t give a shit. ‘Fuck this, I could die tomorrow, let’s go out there and I’m gonna fucking kill this guy!’” But that approach seemed to be dying.

“I’d be lying if I said that fire was still in me these past couple fights,” he continued. “It hasn’t been. I hate to admit it, but shit’s going okay at home. My life’s alright. I’m a lot more of a mellow guy. Just getting older I guess.”

Leben spent most of his career as an exciting, crowd pleasing fighter; and was even considered a title contender for a brief period. But with four straight losses to close his career—and five of his final six—everyone knew something was different.

Hopefully this new direction works out well for Leben. Despite his problems with drugs and booze, he’s a guy fans seem to pull for.
