rashadlossWell today has been a real downer, hasn’t it? UFC 170 just lost its co-main event. Rashad Evans just announced that he would have to pull out due to a leg injury. That means his opponent, Daniel Cormier is without an opponent just over a week from his scheduled light heavyweight debut.

When the news first came out last night, Chael Sonnen volunteered to save the day by fighting Cormier. While that sounded like a pretty good idea, the UFC apparently doesn’t think so. They made a statement saying that they would not seek a replacement due to the short timing. Rory MacDonald vs. Demian Maia will slide up into the co-headlining slot.

Cormier really loses out with this news. A win over a former champion like Evans would have propelled him very quickly into the upper tier of light heavyweight contenders to Jon Jones’ title. Now he falls back into limbo.

The one person who stands to gain in this mess is headliner Ronda Rousey. By losing a great co-main event that is both intriguing and relevant to the title picture, we’ll really see how well Rousey draws. She’s essentially the only draw on the entire card now. Can she still pull a big number without much help? We’ll certainly find out.
