Gina Carano “very open” to signing with UFC; (Psst…I don’t think this is a good idea)

gina_caranoThere has been lots of speculation about the UFC women’s division lately. Fans are all over rumors that champion Ronda Rousey will eventually defend her title against Cris Cyborg, Holly Holm, Gina Carano and god knows who else. Carano didn’t rule it out. She told Fox Sports, she’s still a fighter and

would consider a return to the sport.

“I’ve never retired. I’ve never officially said that. For some reason a part of me has always kept it open. I don’t know, there’s a certain part of me that thinks if circumstances were right, and I could keep doing what I’m trying to make my future into, that’s an ideal world. If circumstances were right, you never know. I’m very open to it.”

That’s interesting on many levels. For one, she hasn’t fought in five years. In MMA, five years is an eternity. Secondly, she’s pretty comfortable NOT getting her face beaten in and starring in movies. She’s carved out a very nice niche for herself…again, one that doesn’t require her to get beaten up. Thirdly, everyone I’ve spoken to says there’s no way Carano could get down to 135 pounds.

That’s a lot of roadblocks. Not to mention, when Carano uses the term “if circumstances were right,” she might as well come right out and say, “if I get paid A LOT OF FUCKING MONEY.” Honestly, I don’t really know if Gina Carano is “big” enough to warrant that kind of treatment. Would she sell crazy PPVs? Man, I don’t know. I guess she’d sell more than average. Where would she fall in the top 10? Would she even be in the top 10?

A fight with Rousey seems ludicrous to talk about. I don’t want to dismiss the skills of Carano, but I can’t imagine she’s even close to the level of Rousey or some of the others in that division. I don’t think she could’ve won TUF last season.

But the door seems to be open. Dana White seems interested. And the fact that Gina is showing interest means the deal won’t be $6,000/$6,000, you can bet on that. The possibility of “hotshotting” (pro rasslin’ term) Carano would appeal to a certain demographic of fans. I just have a lot of doubts whether this is even remotely a good idea.
