Matt Brown didn’t think Hendricks/Lawler was amazing at all — “they were playing pattycake”

MattBrownWhile the dust has pretty much settled on UFC 171 and the main event that nearly everyone thought was an incredible fight, at least one guy didn’t think much of it. UFC welterweight Matt Brown thought the Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler fight was somewhat less than all the rest of us.

On the MMA Hour, Brown talked about the fight with faint praise. “It was a good fight for sure, but it looked like they were just playing pattycake or whatever,” he said. “There wasn’t no finish. There wasn’t anything amazing that happened.”

I gotta tell you, I thought the fight was about as entertaining as any I’ve seen this year. To me Brown sounds like a guy trying to dismiss the accomplishment of new champ Hendricks—and top contender Lawler. Brown is definitely on the outside looking in when it comes to the deep pecking order at welterweight.

He went on to discuss his standing in the division—which according to the official UFC rankings, he sits at #7. “I mean, I don’t know what I gotta do,” Brown said about getting a title shot. “Everybody says, well you gotta fight a top-10 fighter. I just fight whoever they put in front of me. I fought six guys in a row that I beat, I think only one of them went to a decision. It’s not my choice not to fight a top-10 guy.”

I’ll agree with Brown about beating the guys put in front of him—after all, he’s not the matchmaker. But Brown’s winning streak, while impressive, is far from being enough to earn him a title shot in this division. A rundown of Brown’s victims looks like a list of guys either on the way out, or guys who might have been too green to face the veteran of over 30 career fights. None of them were even close to top 10.

I would suspect that if he beats Erick Silva next month, Brown would be getting a top 5 fighter his next time out. He was set to face Carlos Condit on Fox 9 before an injury forced him out of the fight.
