“No way Weidman will be ready by July” — Tim Kennedy

chris-weidman-surgeryI think Tim Kennedy just said what everyone else was thinking. The middleweight contender doesn’t think champion Chris Weidman is going to be able to recover from his recent double knee surgery in time to be ready for the Lyoto Machida fight at UFC 175.

“There’s no way he’s ready by July,” he told MMAjunkie. “No way. Chris Weidman is young, and still has everything to be a champion for a long time. But what your mind and heart tell you is sometimes different than what your body will allow you to do. You have to be a smart athlete.”

Kennedy is the first fighter I’ve seen come out and say this, but he’s not the first person to think the timetable was too aggressive. When I heard of the knee surgeries, my first thought was, “oh shit, that’s 6 months.” I’ve since learned that a torn meniscus isn’t quite that severe, but I still wondered aloud whether Weidman was biting off more than he could chew.

Maybe Kennedy doesn’t have any real knowledge of the situation—which puts him on par with me—but pushing the title fight back even further would be a terrible blow to the summer lineup, which has already seen some shuffling. And a potentially worse move (for Weidman anyway) is if he’s not ready, but he still fights. Machida is a tough enough puzzle to solve for a completely healthy fighter. Even at 90%, Weidman could put himself at a disadvantage.

It’s possible this is just an empty comment by a guy hoping to climb into title contention sometime soon, but when I heard Kennedy say it, I felt a feeling of “uh oh” come over me. We’ll keep a close eye on Weidman’s rehab.
