Welterweights never disappoint — MacDonald/Woodley and Lawler/Ellenberger coming soon!

rory-macdonald-glassesEven though the long-reigning champion Georges St-Pierre is both semi-retired and injured; and the newly crowned champion, Johny Hendricks is also on the shelf with an injury, the (arguably) most exciting division in the UFC keeps chugging along. Two important fights appear to be happening in the next few months that should really help shape the entire weight class while Hendricks rehabs his injury.

First, Jake Ellenberger and Robbie Lawler will square off at UFC 173 in what is sure to provide some fireworks. The two heavy-handed sluggers will look to regain their places in the crowded 170 pound division. Lawler of course narrowly lost a decision to Hendricks in his title bid last month. Ellenberger likewise is coming off a loss—his to Rory MacDonald last July. Both Ellenberger and Lawler have 18 career knockouts, so the odds of this one ending early is fairly high.

The next big fight that is close to getting signed is the aforementioned MacDonald taking on fast rising Tyron Woodley. MacDonald impressively beat Demian Maia at UFC 170, and is itching for that title fight. Woodley however won’t be an easy win. He’s as hot as anyone in the division with wins over former contenders Carlos Condit and Josh Koscheck. Although the fight isn’t signed yet, it looks like it will pad the UFC 174 card very nicely.

While the light heavyweight division (oh no, here I go again) continues to offer up non-compelling fights in order to prevent contenders form losing, the welterweight division never disappoints me.
