Jake Shields…YOU’RE FIRED!!!

Posted: April 7, 2014 in Commentary/Opinion

trump-youre-firedHot off the press. Reports are coming out that Jake Shields was just released by the UFC. While Shields’ UFC record was just 4-3 (1 NC) since coming over from Strikeforce in 2010, his run with the company was filled with incredible performances and lots of excitement. In fact, many people say Shields is the most exciting fighter of all time. Okay, no one thinks any of that.

Shields’ strong suit was definitely not fan friendly, to say the least. When he first entered the UFC, he was given a narrow (meaning questionable) split decision over martin Kampmann, which somehow was enough to earn him a title shot at GSP. After losing to St-Pierre, Jake Ellenberger did us all a favor by knocking Shields OUT in less than a minute. That fight remains literally the only fight in Shields’ career that I didn’t vomit. Before his most recent loss to Hector Lombard, in which Shields didn’t look good at all, he took home back to back victories over Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia—both of which were excruciating to watch.

Oh, and he failed a drug test too.

Shields’ manager, Lex McMahon released the following statement:

“Jake Shields has been released by the UFC. Jake appreciates the opportunities provided by the UFC and thanks Dana White and Lorenzo Fertita. Jake is an elite athlete who is one of the best welterweight fighters in the world with a long history of winning at a championship level.”

Best of luck to Shields, who may be able to FINALLY give fans what we’ve all wanted for so long—Jake Shields vs. Ben Askren!
