Overeem got his ass kicked by Rumble, Rashad, Belfort & more during training

Silva-def-Overeem-UFC-156The Blackzillians have taken their share of heat in the news. Poor performances and some fighter departures have added to the bad reputation gained by the Florida based team. As of late however, they’ve begun to show a little bit of a resurgence. Winning streaks by their highest profile members—Anthony Johnson, Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort—could potentially turn things around. Another key moment in their turnaround seemed to be when Alistair Overeem left the camp.

At least that’s the opinion of one of the prospects who trains there, Gilbert Burns. Burns relays a story of how Overeem cheap shotted fellow heavyweight Guto Inocente during a striking session. “Guto was recovering from a knee injury, returning to training, and, even with a broken hand, he was beating Overeem up in a striking sparring,” Burns told Sexto Round Podcast.

“Overeem got mad because he was getting beat up by a guy with one hand, so he took Guto down and blew out his other knee. That’s why Guto hasn’t fought in a while. We were all upset about it, and that was when (Overeem) left the team. After he left, the team got better and we had better results. Thank God he left the team.”

Essentially, Burns is telling us Overeem is a cocky dick. I suppose that’s not too hard to believe. He has an air of arrogance to him, to say the least. Inocente corroborated the story and also confirmed that he was “kicking his ass” before the “unexpected” takedown blew out the knee.

In fact, Burns said it wasn’t uncommon for Overeem to take a beating in training, even from smaller fighters. “I saw him get beat up bad in training by Anthony Johnson, Rashad, Vitor and Tyrone (Spong),” he said.

Even though the Blackzillians have earned some jeers in the MMA community since their beginning—and I’m not disclaiming those bad reports—this news makes my chuckle. Big bad Overeem with horse meat running through his veins getting his ass kicked by the other guys in the gym is kind of funny to me.

So what do you think? Is Overeem the bad guy? Or is this just sour grapes from a team that’s been troubled in the past? Personally, I’d like to picture Overeem getting the shit kicked out of him.
