lawlerJust when you thought your day couldn’t get any better, the MMA gods smiled upon us all yet again. No, I’m not talking about Bob Sapp retiring, although the day he disappears for good will be a joyous occasion. Just as I predicted moments after Robbie Lawler’s dominant win Saturday night, the UFC has booked an excellent welterweight bout between “Ruthless” and Matt Brown.

The two crowd pleasers will square off as the headliner of the UFC on Fox 12 event in San Jose. Brown is on a 7 fight tear where he’s been knocking off mid-tier fighters one by one for the past 2 years. And Lawler has looked like an absolute beast during his 4-1 stint in the UFC.

While the knock on Brown is that he hasn’t faced any top 10 talent, he’s as entertaining as anyone in the sport. He’s won performance bonuses in each of his last 3 fights.

Lawler has big wins over stars Josh Koscheck, Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger, and his only blemish since returning to the UFC was a very close decision loss to world champion Johny Hendricks.

We’re still about 2 months away, but I’m leaning heavily toward Lawler in this one. He looked like he was from another planet against Ellenberger, a guy who was considered by most to be a legitimate contender until Lawler made him look foolish. If he can defeat Brown, Lawler will certainly find himself looking across the cage at Hendricks one more time with the belt on the line.
