ESPN’s documentary series E:60 just released a video featuring current UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre. As most of you know, GSP will be making his much-anticipated return to the Octagon on November 17th, where he’ll defend his belt against interim champ Carlos Condit.

The mini-doc chronicles GSP’s humble beginnings from a bullied kid from a small town outside of Montreal to his ascend to being the biggest star in the biggest MMA organization in the world. And regardless of if you’re a GSP fan or not, watching this video will give you new-found respect for what GSP went through to get to where he is today.  (more…)

You know the saying, “the proof is in the pudding?” Well, if you’re going strictly by that, you need to start eating like Ronda Rousey. I mean, not only does she look like this she also won the Strikeforce Bantamweight belt in her 5th professional fight.

So what is this secret diet? It’s actually named after football great and AKA fighter Herschel Walker. Here’s the rundown according to Rousey herself. Transcribed by (more…)

I know a lot of you train and I think that’s awesome. I too dabble in the martial arts and I’m always looking for ways to improve my technique and/or conditioning. Specifically, I’ve been looking at new ways to supplement my BJJ training. Like a lot of you, I have a full time job and a family so getting to class 3 to 4x a week isn’t very attainable. That said, I recently stumbled across a great grappling website called DSTRYRsg.com, which covers every aspect of grappling sports but not MMA. A great site worth checking out regardless. Anyway, they just posted a video (see below) of one of the best BJJ players around, Andre Galvao training with things called a bosu ball and a Bulgarian bag. (more…)

MMA has evolved ten-fold since the days of Royce Gracie and Co., but there are things that still remain the same. Say what you want about “BJJ being dead” but you’re always going to see arm-bars, guillotines and rear-naked chokes in MMA. Which leads me to Mrs. Rousey’s 8 steps to a perfect arm-bar. Mrs. Rousey, aka Dr. Ann Maria, or better known as Ronda Rousey’s mom, is the only American to ever win a gold at the World Judo Championships. And not only that, she taught her daughter and current Strikeforce champ Ronda judo, which lead to her own bronze medal at the 08 Olympics and a current MMA record of 5-0, with all 5 wins coming via arm-bar. In other words, you should listen up.

Without further adieu, Dr. Ann Maria’s steps to a perfect arm-bar. (more…)

Eddie Bravo, known around the world as the founder of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, is at it again with the creation of Combat Jiu Jitsu, or CJJ. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu for those of you not in the know is an off-shoot of BJJ, with an emphasis on unconventional techniques  (e.g. rubber guard, Twister) without a gi. So I guess it makes sense that Bravo, already an advocate for more realistic BJJ, would come up with CJJ. So what in the world is it? In short, it’s BJJ with punches. But don’t just take my word for it.

In an interview with BJPenn.com, Bravo elaborates on the concept of CJJ: (more…)

And of course, with everything Bas related, he has a story to tell. In a recent post from MMAMania, former Pancrase and UFC champ Bas Rutten talks about how he came to realize that, at least from his perspective, that ground fighting is more dominant than standing attacks. Odd for someone that is not only known for his striking, but actually has his own patented striking device called the BAS (Body Action System).

At any rate, here’s a story on how Bas came to realize that ground fighting is where it’s at (two turn tables and a microphone) (more…)

In the ever popular “Gracie Breakdown,” where brothers Rener and Ryron Gracie break down the latest and greatest ground action from the prior UFC event, comes a special Korean Zombie Edition, stemming from the Zombie’s breakthrough performance this past Tuesday on UFC on Fuel III. So special was this Gracie Breakdown, not only was it unplanned, as the Gracie’s were on a retreat, it also includes the addition of Rener and Ryron’s brother Ralek, and their patriarch and UFC founder, 9th degree black belt Rorion.
